Kia has confirmed the name of its highly anticipated bakkie: the Kia Tasman. Inspired by the rugged beauty and pioneering spirit of Tasmania, the island at the southernmost tip of Australia, the name evokes a spirit of adventure and exploration.

Kia plans to debut its first-ever pickup model in 2025, implementing a phased global launch strategy that includes markets like Korea, Australia, Africa and the Middle East. We look forward to driving it!

Volvo will be launching electric buses in South Af

Volvo will be launching electric buses in South Africa! We can reveal this news after spending three days in Gothenburg, which – of course – is the home of Volvo Buses. While here, we attended the world launch of the new Volvo BZR Electric, a global platform for city, intercity, and commuter operations.

The Volvo BZR Electric is a flexible platform that comes as high-floor or low-entry, in two or three-axle configurations, and with a single or dual motor driveline. It features a modular energy storage system where the number of batteries can be adjusted to match different
types of operations.

It is designed to enable versions for both Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and, later on, coach applications. At launch, the platform accommodates lengths from 9.5 to 15 metres, a maximum weight of 27,000 kg and traction power of up to 400 kW, or 540 hp.

We don’t have a date for Volvo’s launch of electric buses in South Africa. However, our interviews with the executive team reveal that the e-buses will come “as soon as the market is ready”. You can read more about this – and lots more – in the April issue of FOCUS.

WESTERN STAR WINS TRUCK OF THE YEAR AUSTRALASIA

The new Western Star X-Series is the 2024 Truck of the Year Australasia! The winner of this sought-after accolade was announced at a pre-conference event ahead of the opening of the inaugural Teletrac-Navman Technical Maintenance and Safety Conference on 13 March 2024 in Christchurch, New Zealand. The coveted trophy was presented to Penske Australia and New Zealand managing director Hamish Christie-Johnston.

The Western Star fended off serious competition in the form of the Volvo F-Series Electric and Scania’s Super Series.

Truck of the Year Australasia is judged by by PowerTorque editor Tim Giles, New Zealand Trucking Media editorial director Dave McCoid, FOCUS on Transport & Logistics editorial director Charleen Clarke, long-time Australian trucking industry stalwart, Bob Woodward (who recently retired as the Australian Trucking Association’s chief engineer), and Randolph Covich, publisher of Deals on Wheels (New Zealand).
