The Wall Street Journal reports that the Illinois-based automotive factory of EV startup Rivian will be powered by old batteries from its own vehicles.

MAN Truck & Bus has demonstrated bidirectional charging in real-world conditions at the premises of a German logistics company โ€“ showing how electric trucks can be turned into flexible energy storage systems.

๐Ÿฅ‡ This makes MAN the first commercial vehicle OEM to functionally demonstrate bidirectional vehicle technology within a research project. The project, called SPIRIT E, is supported by a broad consortium covering the entire value chain.

๐Ÿšš The truck featured was a battery-electric MAN eTGX with 480kWh of usable energy. 

โ™ป๏ธ Instead of only consuming electricity, the etruck could store power and feed it back into other systems as needed โ€“ improving fleet economics while also supporting the stability of the energy system.

Three core applications at the forefront of practical use are Vehicle to Vehicle, Vehicle to Site and Vehicle to Grid. Intelligent energy management of this nature can reduce energy costs by around 10-20%. 

๐Ÿ’ก Bidirectional charging is particularly relevant for etrucks in regional operations with an annual mileage below 100,000km. It is not, however, suitable for truck applications where operations donโ€™t allow for longer dwell times at a depot.

Toyota and Isuzu have formalised an agreement to jointly develop what is set to be Japan's first mass-produced light-duty hydrogen fuel cell truck, with production targeted for 2027.

๐Ÿšš The vehicle will be based on Isuzu's ELF EV platform and integrate Toyota's third-generation fuel cell stack, with the aim of improving durability and extending service life. Toyota's new fuel cell system delivers around 20% better efficiency than its predecessor.

๐Ÿ“ˆ The rationale for hydrogen over battery-electric (BEVs) in this segment is largely operational: light-duty delivery trucks often run long hours, cover significant distances, and carry refrigeration equipment โ€“ conditions where fast refuelling and extended range offer a practical advantage over BEVs.

โ›ฝ๏ธ Infrastructure remains a decisive factor: without a sufficient network of hydrogen refuelling stations, even technically capable vehicles will struggle to gain commercial traction. Vehicle cost is the other acknowledged hurdle, with both companies actively working to reduce it through manufacturing and design optimisation rather than assuming scale alone will solve it.

The City of Cape Town is adopting novel ways to tackle speeding on its roads, including the use of smart speed limit signs that display actual speeds and โ€œnudgeโ€ drivers to slow down if exceeding the limit. These have reportedly had a marked impact on reducing speeding in the city.

๐Ÿ“ธ Mayoral committee member for urban mobility Roberto Quintas says there may also be a need to install camera traps about 100m after the signs to catch drivers who accelerate soon after they slowed down. 

๐Ÿคณ The city has also been trialling AI-powered cameras with number plate recognition, with the intention to roll the system out permanently. The cameras can pick up speeding and also detect drivers not wearing seatbelts or using their mobile phones while driving. 

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš–๏ธ But motorists have already challenged fines issued using this system, and technology law consultant Dr Andrew Rens questions the systemโ€™s legality in an interview with Mybroadband. 

He questions whether the AI identification of alleged illegal behaviour can be considered sufficient evidence on its own, and whether itโ€™s acceptable for a public body to use AI to detect infringements.

Bloomberg has reported that commercial cargo vessels keen to avoid the Middle East are stopping to refuel at Mauritiusโ€™ Port Louis Harbour in the Indian Ocean. 

The number of vessels stopping at Namibiaโ€™s Port of Walvis Bay for ship-to-ship bunkering is also rising. The operations can be supplied by offshore logistics and donโ€™t depend on onshore storage.

๐Ÿš— Hyundai Motor Co is also rerouting its ships to the Cape of Good Hope to avoid the Strait of Hormuz, as part of a plan to insulate the organisation from supply-chain shocks, tariffs and geopolitical tension.

Saudi Railways (SAR) has unveiled five new freight logistics routes, linking Gulf ports with inland, Red Sea and crossโ€‘border corridors to create a fully integrated, multimodal cargo network across the Kingdom. 

๐Ÿšข Managed through key hubs including the Riyadh Dry Port and multiple freight yards nationwide, these routes support vital sectors such as petrochemicals and mining while reducing transit times, emissions and road congestion. 

๐Ÿช– The timing is particularly significant. Amid ongoing conflict and instability in the Middle East, strengthening resilient, landโ€‘based and multimodal supply chains are critical for keeping trade flowing and markets connected. 

As noted by Dr Bashar Alโ€‘Malik, CEO of SAR, the initiative enhances reliability โ€œunder all conditionsโ€, reinforcing Saudi Arabiaโ€™s role as a key Eastโ€‘West trade corridor and global logistics hub.
