Tata Motors recently launched new commercial vehicles on the South African market including four electric vehicles.

๐Ÿ›ป The Ace Pro EV is a 1.6-tonne truck designed for last-mile deliveries, with an expected range of around 120km in real-world conditions. It can carry 750kg and has a top speed of 50km/h. Its smart connectivity enables real-time tracking and optimisation to improve delivery routes.

๐Ÿšš The Intra EV Pickup is a larger electric truck weighing in at 3.3 tonnes and with a top speed of 80km/h. Suited to inter- and intra-city operations, it can carry loads of up to 1,750kg and has a range of ~140km. 

๐Ÿ—๏ธ The Prima E.28K is a 28-tonne 6x4 tipper truck with a range of 220km and engineered for zero-emission mining operations and demanding construction environments.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Tata Motorsโ€™ executive director Girish Wagh says the group aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045 and will work towards creating a diverse portfolio of new energy commercial vehicles.

Earlier this year, an unmanned cargo aircraft took off in China's Hunan province powered by the AEP100 โ€“ a megawatt-class hydrogen turboprop engine developed by the Aero Engine Corporation of China (AECC). It flew 36km at 220km/h and landed 16 minutes later, marking what's been called the world's first flight test of a hydrogen turboprop at this power scale.

๐Ÿ’ก The aircraft is believed to be a W5000 uncrewed drone, developed by Chinese cargo drone manufacturer Air White Whale.

โ„๏ธ Unlike hydrogen fuel cells used in some electric aircraft concepts, the AEP100 burns hydrogen directly in a turbine cycle โ€“ closer to how conventional jet engines work. It's a natural fit for cargo, island routes and regional services, though challenges remain: liquid hydrogen must be stored near -253ยฐC, and questions around durability, maintenance and operating costs are still unanswered.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ China has a clear roadmap โ€“ key tech validation by 2028, regional aircraft by 2035 and mainline commercial use by 2050. Officials are pointing first to unmanned freight and island logistics as early applications.

A costly legal battle is jeopardising the Tambo Springs inland port and logistics gateway that would streamline cargo movement between Durban and Johannesburg. 

โฐ๏ธ Because of a missed deadline for an appeal filing, a Gauteng High Court ruling that cancelled the environmental approval for the K148 road will now stand. The proposed road forms a critical part of the inland port vision.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) warns that bitterly cold, wet and windy conditions are to be expected across parts of the country this first week of June.

Conditions are set to deteriorate from Wednesday, when SAWS says disruptive rain could hit the Eastern Cape. 

โ›ˆ๏ธ Parts of the Western and Northern Cape can expect very cold weather including rainfall and snowfall in high-lying areas, making travel over mountain passes difficult and dangerous. Strong winds may also cause disruptions.

๐Ÿšš Transporters and drivers are urged to remain vigilant and exercise extreme caution when planning routes or travelling on the roads.

When entering its Powerstar VL 550 AMT 6x4 truck tractor, the OEM took up the challenge to compete with nine other leading commercial vehicle brands on the N3 route between Johannesburg and Durban. 

The record line-up also includes Daewoo, DAF, FAW, MAN, Mercedes-Benz, Scania, Shacman, Sinotruk and Volvo Trucks.

โ›ฝ๏ธ During the three-day event in November, the trucks will be assessed based on fuel consumption and speed over the defined route, with the results combined into a productivity index. This index reflects a simple but critical question: how much work can a truck perform per litre of fuel, and how efficiently can it complete the task?

๐Ÿšš To ensure a transparent and data-driven evaluation process, this performance will be accurately measured and the results independently compiled by technical partner TruckScience.

Earlier this week, a Cathay Pacific Airbus A350-900 suddenly plunged mid-air during a flight from Brisbane to Hong Kong, leaving 10 people injured, including six cabin crew and four passengers.

๐Ÿ˜ฅ Many feared for their lives as severe turbulence rocked the plane, throwing passengers, phones and food carts around the cabin. The turbulence struck without warning as cabin crew had just begun serving breakfast on the overnight flight. The plane plunged twice in quick succession. 

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ โ€œThe first one caught everyone completely off guard, and then probably 15 or 20 seconds later it happened again,โ€ a passenger later recalled. โ€œAnyone that didn't have their belts on hit the roof.โ€

โš ๏ธ Just one year ago, a Singapore Airlines flight had to make an emergency landing in Bangkok after a 73-year-old passenger died of a suspected heart attack after the plane encountered severe turbulence 37,000 ft in the air. At least 18 people required hospitalisation after that terrifying ordeal. 

๐ŸŒก๏ธ As climate change causes global temperatures to rise, scientists say some of the causes of turbulence are already intensifying. A 2017 study predicted that severe turbulence will become two to three times more common over the North Atlantic by 2050-2080 because of climate change. 

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ โ€œThose jet streams that are at aircraft flight levels are projected to intensify, which means that those regions will become more turbulent,โ€ noted an atmospheric scientist from the University of Melbourne.

โ›ˆ๏ธ As well as increasingly intense jet streams, climate scientists have warned that storms are worsening as well.
