Today, the world marks progress in mobility, sustainability and accessibility. But here at home, the reality feels very different. In a country where millions rely on public transport daily, weโ€™re still facing:

โ€ข Unreliable (or non-existent) rail networks

โ€ข Overburdened taxi systems

โ€ข Massive safety concerns for commuters

โ€ข Limited integration between transport modes

๐Ÿ‘€ So hereโ€™s the uncomfortable question: Are we celebrating a system that works โ€“ or highlighting one thatโ€™s failing the very people itโ€™s meant to serve?

Public transport should be the backbone of economic growth. It should connect people to jobs, education, and opportunity. Instead, for many South Africans, itโ€™s a daily gamble.

And yetโ€ฆ the sector keeps moving. Informal networks adapt. Operators innovate. People make a plan.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Maybe today isnโ€™t about celebration.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Maybe itโ€™s about accountability.

What do you think? Should South Africa be celebrating World Public Transport Day, or demanding better?

This week at the IFOY Test Days in Dortmund, one m This week at the IFOY Test Days in Dortmund, one machine stopped us in our tracks.

Meet the STILL RX 60-50/600 โ€“ a 2026 IFOY Award nominee thatโ€™s doing far more than just moving pallets. Itโ€™s changing lives!

This electric forklift has been specially engineered for an employee of small stature โ€“ with millimetre-precise adjustability, a customised entry system, fold-down backrest, and additional handholds. Every detail is designed around one thing: making the workplace truly accessible.

But hereโ€™s what makes this story even more powerful:
๐Ÿ‘‰ The German government funds the full modification of forklifts like this one
๐Ÿ‘‰ It also covers 50% of the forkliftโ€™s ยฑR1.6 million cost!

Incredibly, despite its bespoke design, the forklift can be reset at the touch of a button and used by any operator in the fleet.

Hats off to STILL. Anyone can build advanced machines. But enabling people like Patrick (see our video) to enter the workforce? Thatโ€™s innovation that actually matters.

Bloomberg has reported that commercial cargo vessels keen to avoid the Middle East are stopping to refuel at Mauritiusโ€™ Port Louis Harbour in the Indian Ocean.

The number of vessels stopping at Namibiaโ€™s Port of Walvis Bay for ship-to-ship bunkering is also rising. The operations can be supplied by offshore logistics and donโ€™t depend on onshore storage.

๐Ÿš— Hyundai Motor Co is also rerouting its ships to the Cape of Good Hope to avoid the Strait of Hormuz, as part of a plan to insulate the organisation from supply-chain shocks, tariffs and geopolitical tension.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ At the CONEXPO-CON/AGG expo in Las Vegas in March, Bell Equipment and its US master distributor, Bell Trucks America, highlighted the practical, built-in advantages of the Bell Articulated Dump Truck range.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ "Muddy ground, long shifts and fuel costs are just some of the real-world challenges our customers face on job sites," says Bell product manager Brad Castle. "Our Bell B20E, equipped with standard low ground pressure tyres, is a compact, durable solution that shares the same DNA as our larger trucks, offering the benefits of low ground pressure characteristics in soft underfoot conditions and environmentally sensitive areas."

๐Ÿ’ก Key to the machineโ€™s versatility is its extremely tight outer turning circle radius of 7,585mm, which guarantees maximum manoeuvrability in close working environments.

๐Ÿ›ป The Bell B20E LGP is suitable for site stripping in difficult sandy or muddy underfoot conditions. It also guarantees quick access to remote construction sites, such as wind farms or projects in environmentally sensitive areas, where larger machines require extensive preparation or cause excessive underfoot damage.

700km on a single charge. Let that sink in.

The new Volvo FH Aero Electric is rewriting whatโ€™s possible for long-distance transport. Thanks to its next-gen e-axle driveline, it packs in more batteries without compromising performance โ€“ pushing electric trucking further than ever before.

And charging? No more waiting around. With Megawatt Charging System (MCS) support, it can go from 20% to 80% in about 50 minutes.

This isnโ€™t just an upgrade. Itโ€™s a glimpse into a zero-emission future where electric trucks donโ€™t just compete with diesel vehiclesโ€ฆ they replace them.

Chinaโ€™s 0% tariff access from 1 May for South African exports is set to lift volumes for citrus and wine into China โ€“ and itโ€™s not just good for agriculture, there are potential benefits for the logistics sector as well:

๐Ÿ“ฆ๏ธ More export bookings & higher peak-season demand โžก๏ธ plan reefer/container availability and vessel space early.

โ„๏ธ Updated citrus cold-treatment requirements mean less extreme temperatures โžก๏ธ potentially lower energy use and reduced cold-damage risk during transit.

China's health standards remain in place irrespective of tariff policy. The phytosanitary protocol is managed by the GACC, China's Customs authority.

๐Ÿ‘ Stone fruit, including plums, peaches and nectarines, already have approved protocols and can immediately benefit from zero-tariff status.

๐ŸŠ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ Citrus, apples and pears operate under long-standing agreements and will see their existing 11-12% tariffs removed.

๐ŸŒฐ The nut sector, including macadamias and pecans, also holds established phytosanitary protocols.

Saudi Railways (SAR) has unveiled five new freight logistics routes, linking Gulf ports with inland, Red Sea and crossโ€‘border corridors to create a fully integrated, multimodal cargo network across the Kingdom.

๐Ÿšข Managed through key hubs including the Riyadh Dry Port and multiple freight yards nationwide, these routes support vital sectors such as petrochemicals and mining while reducing transit times, emissions and road congestion.

๐Ÿช– The timing is particularly significant. Amid ongoing conflict and instability in the Middle East, strengthening resilient, landโ€‘based and multimodal supply chains are critical for keeping trade flowing and markets connected.

As noted by Dr Bashar Alโ€‘Malik, CEO of SAR, the initiative enhances reliability โ€œunder all conditionsโ€, reinforcing Saudi Arabiaโ€™s role as a key Eastโ€‘West trade corridor and global logistics hub.

Govender has been in the towing business since 2005 and has bought only Hino trucks for his business.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธโ€œI currently operate two other tow trucks โ€“ Hino 814 and 915 models โ€“ and over the years I have owned plenty of other Hinoโ€™s, including 8-tonners, as well as a Toyota Dyna,โ€ he explained.

๐Ÿ’ก The 700 Series tow truck is based on a 6x4 freight carrier model. It had its bodywork built by Durban-based Transpec while another local company, Artistic Signs and Graphics, was responsible for the stand-out livery.

Volvo and Daimler Truck are combining their extensive commercial vehicle expertise with Toyotaโ€™s fuel cell development and manufacturing experience in a joint venture aimed at strengthening the market competitiveness of cellcentric, a manufacturer of fuel cell systems.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Cellcentric will be the joint centre of competence that develops, produces and commercialises fuel cell systems for heavy-duty on- and off-road transport and other heavy-duty applications with comparable requirements.

Through collaboration with industry associations and partners across the entire hydrogen value chain, the partners also aim to actively support the development of hydrogen supply and infrastructure in the early stages.

Road freight operators are under immense pressure following the 32.5% increase on 1 April in the basic cost of diesel in South Africa.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced a R3 per-litre reduction in the fuel levy during the month of April to help offset the impact of surging oil prices on domestic fuel pricing. But fleet operators worry about further fuel price increases, says the Road Freight Association, and many are concerned about clients refusing to pay higher transport rates.

๐Ÿ˜Ÿ Access to cash reserves to pay for growing fuel costs is another source of worry for an already challenged sector. The fuller impact may only be felt towards the end of April, warns the RFA.

The recall affects 582 custom passenger vehicles (2022-2026 model year) that were made available for sale across South Africa between 2021 and 2025.

๐ŸชซFord reports via the National Consumer Commission that the affected vehicles may have an issue with the H7 AGM battery. The affected vehicles may produce an acidic smell similar to that of rotten eggs inside the cabin, a hissing sound, or visible gas venting from the battery. In some cases, the seat area may feel unusually warm. Increased temperatures may cause a reaction in the battery that produces hydrogen sulphide gas. Prolonged exposure to this gas may pose potential health risks to vehicle occupants.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Owners of the affected vehicles are urged to take their vehicles to the nearest authorised dealership for repairs, to be carried out at no cost to the consumer.

Tonight weโ€™re in Sandton for the launch of the bra Tonight weโ€™re in Sandton for the launch of the brand new FAW J7. Itโ€™s the flagship of the FAW range, powered by a 550hp drivetrain.

Pricing and total cost of ownership are said to be exceptional. In fact, you can get 10 of these FAW J7 trucks for the price of seven European models.

We havenโ€™t driven it yet, but weโ€™re told it really is a premium truck.
Everyone knows the rule: when traffic lights are o Everyone knows the rule: when traffic lights are out, you treat the intersection as a four-way stop. Simple. Basic. Non-negotiable.

Apparently not for these two truck drivers.

We watched them blast through not one โ€“ but TWO โ€“ intersections in Pretoria at around 80 km/h, without even touching the brakes. No hesitation. No regard for anyone else on the road.

What is wrong with people?

This isnโ€™t just reckless โ€“ itโ€™s deadly. When drivers behave like this, people donโ€™t just get scaredโ€ฆ they get killed.

Global logistics giant DHL will acquire local firms Vital Distribution, Vital Fleet and Staffing Logistics, if approved by South Africaโ€™s Competition Tribunal.

๐Ÿ’ต This follows the companyโ€™s announcement last year that it will invest R6 billion in its African business. It also plans to expand its supply chain logistics in SA, says the CEO of supply chain in DHLโ€™s Middle East & Africa region, Orkun Saruhanoglu.

โ€œWe are seeing growing demand for specialised, outsourced logistics, particularly in life sciences and healthcare and across the transporter sector. By adding capacity, strengthening transport-led solutions and applying our contract logistics expertise, we will help customers improve service quality, manage risk and scale with confidence.โ€

๐Ÿ’ก Vital Distribution provides transport, distribution and warehousing logistics services by road for FMCG, industrial, manufacturing and retail markets, while Vital Fleet manages specialised vehicles ranging from one-tonne vans to 34-tonne long-haul trucks. Vitalโ€™s human resources arm, Staffing Logistics, has a nationwide network of 96 operations across SA and can quickly deploy staff to new operations at scale.

The three companies would be folded into DHLโ€™s operations in SA.

The US-Israel war on Iran is redrawing shipping routes overnight, sending vessels around Africaโ€™s coast. But the safety of ships passing around the Cape cannot be guaranteed, with the Coast Guard struggling even to keep up with illegal fishing.

Nicholas Woode-Smith warns that, as traffic surges, South Africaโ€™s struggling ports, weak infrastructure and policy missteps threaten to turn a rare logistics opportunity into a costly failure.
