Potter takes over from Waldemar Christensen, who led the organisation since 2022 and now assumes the role of CEO at Volvo’s Designwerk Technologies in Switzerland.

💡 Part of the Volvo Trucks family since 2014, Potter has been involved in the commercial vehicle and transport industry for the past 33 years. He began his career as a heavy commercial vehicle technician and has since built extensive experience across a variety of leadership roles within the aftermarket, retail and operational areas of the business.

💓 “The heartbeat of the commercial vehicle industry is its people,” said Potter. “Fleet owners operate in a very real world with significant challenges. That is why keeping people at the centre of what we do, building trust and long term partnerships, is essential to ensuring we support our customers every step of the way.”

🚚 Potter believes that the Volvo Trucks dealer network in South Africa plays a pivotal role in customer success.

👉 Volvo Group Southern Africa’s head office is located in Jet Park, Gauteng, and the organisation operates a Volvo Trucks assembly plant in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. Local operations include Volvo Trucks, Volvo Penta, Volvo Bus and Volvo Financial Services, employing approximately 750 people, with operations supported by a dealer footprint of 20 dealers, 12 wholly owned and eight privately owned across the country.

Hyundai Motor Group has donated four Unmanned Firefighting Robots designed for high-risk environments to South Korea’s National Fire Agency.

The Group aims to help build a safer society by providing the technologies and support needed to ensure that firefighters can carry out their missions in a safer environment.

💦 Based on Hyundai Rotem’s HR-Sherpa multi-purpose unmanned vehicle, the robots are equipped with a water cannon, self-spraying system, vision-enhancing camera and remote-control operation. This helps them carry out initial fire suppression and search missions in environments that are inaccessible to firefighters

Hundreds of trucks have been brought to a standstill overnight – cargo frozen, contracts in jeopardy, and transporters left in limbo after Zimbabwe abruptly banned the export of raw minerals and lithium.

Loaded trucks are now stranded at mines, police stations and border posts – including Beitbridge – while clearing agents refuse to process shipments and losses mount by the hour.

Industry leaders are calling it a “catastrophic political blunder” – one that could permanently damage Zimbabwe’s role as a regional transit hub and force transporters to reroute elsewhere.

This is more than a policy shift. This is a crisis unfolding in real time – and the transport industry is paying the price.

Running through the Du Toitskloof mountains, the 𝟯.𝟵𝗸𝗺 𝗛𝘂𝗴𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗧𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹 is Africa's longest road tunnel. Sanral’s R4bn project upgrade is set to produce two separate carriageways, each in single-directional tunnels, which should greatly improve traffic on the N1. 🚚🛻

🏔️ Compare that with China’s latest addition – the 𝗧𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗶 𝗧𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹, 𝗮 𝟮𝟮𝗸𝗺-𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹 at the centre of the Urumqi-Yuli Expressway.

Constructed over five years, it’s now officially the world’s longest tunnel and has halved the travel time between Urumqi and Korla to 3.5 hours.

A moving crew from Camelback Moving in Phoenix, USA, was on a coffee break at a gas station when a security guard told them he'd seen a toddler entering the store who matched the description of an Amber Alert (a missing person notification).

🚚 The team quickly maneuvered two of the company’s trucks to prevent the suspected abductor from leaving the gas station with the child. Police arrived soon afterwards to arrest the woman and recover the toddler.

🗣️ Company founder Chad Olsen noted: “Every man there that morning was a father. Many of them have daughters. This wasn’t about being heroes – it was instinct."

👉 The company staff had participated in Truckers Against Trafficking training, a programme that teaches movers and truckers how to recognise signs of trafficking.

"Truckers and movers are in a unique position to prevent this or at least recognise some of the signs," Olsen said.

Australian journalists got a sneak peak of Chery’s KP31 bakkie concept at a Sydney event, with the unveiling of what will be the world’s first double-cab bakkie with a Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) diesel system.

📢 Scheduled for launch in Australia in Q4 2026, the 2.5-litre turbocharged engine will offer class-leading thermal efficiency rated at 47%, while also being 10% more fuel efficient compared to the average diesel powertrain.

It will additionally provide a competitive 1000kg payload and 3.5-tonne towing capacity. The production version provides a 30% vibration reduction compared to the average diesel powertrain.

👉 A petrol PHEV powertrain will also join the line-up in 2027.

Nina Bratlie has been appointed the new managing director of Volvo Financial Services (VFS).

🚚 This dedicated captive finance arm of the Volvo Group provides tailored financing, leasing and insurance solutions for trucks, construction equipment and buses. VFS has been operating in SA since 2017.

Prior to the appointment, Bratlie was the MD of VFS in Norway for four years. Her career spans three decades in the financial sector across various positions encompassing asset finance, factoring and insurance.

🗣️ “Even though we share the same strategy across VFS, and operate with the same values, I look forward to getting to know our South African customers and their unique local business conditions,” said Bratlie.

Britain’s automotive industry is on a major skills drive with the number of apprentices in the sector rising by 33% and new starters up 28% in 2025.
This is according to a new survey of major employers by the UK Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

📈 There were 1,699 apprenticeship starts in the last academic year, while a further 1,824 apprenticeship courses were provided to upskill existing workers in their current role.

The survey showed that 61% of existing roles across the sector are expected to have 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟯𝟱, such as high-voltage system capability, battery handling and digital skills including coding, data analysis and AI expertise.
