Hilux tops for 44 years

A total of 35 428 sales during 2016 allowed the Toyota Hilux to make history by achieving sales leadership in South Africa for the 44th time, in the past 47 years. It was also the 37th year, in an unbroken run since 1980, that the Toyota brand has grabbed the number-one sales spot in South Africa.

“Toyota’s achievement has been nothing short of remarkable,” says Calvyn Hamman, senior vice president of sales and marketing.

In the 2016 Vehicle Quality Survey by Ipsos, Toyota South Africa Motors stood out with total of 12 Gold awards; seven of which were in the Hilux’s light commercial vehicle category.

The bakkie achieved the best quality score for the Petrol Single Cab and won a further two category awards including Best Diesel Single Cab and Best Diesel Double Cab. Hilux was also awarded the best One-Tonne Single Cab Commercial Vehicle Brand and the Best Double Cab Commercial Vehicle Brand.

Furthermore, Toyota won the Best Light Commercial Vehicle Brand overall, as well as the award for the Best Light Commercial Vehicle Plant – the Gold Award for its manufacturing facility located in Prospecton, KwaZulu-Natal.

On the commercial vehicle front, Hino sold 232 units in December 2016, with Hino 300 and Toyota Dyna combining to achieve a 20,8 percent share in the medium commercial vehicle segment.

“Toyota’s quality, durability and reliability have undoubtedly played a big part in keeping our loyal base of fans while attracting new buyers. I’d like to use this opportunity to thank each and every one of our customers for putting their faith in Toyota and its affiliate brands. I know that they will be rewarded with a deeply satisfying motoring experience,” Hamman concludes.
