As off-grid, solar-powered EV charging stations pop up along the Johannesburg-Durban N3 corridor, Zero Carbon Charge (Charge) and Volvo Cars are excited to report a new record!

๐Ÿš˜๏ธ A Volvo ES90 achieved the countryโ€™s fastest EV charging speed to date on Wednesday 20 May at the Charge N3 Tugela station at the Three Towers Farm Stall in KwaZulu-Natal. The premium saloon charged from 9% to 80% in just 21 minutes.

๐Ÿ”‹ The charging station supports up to 360kW of peak output across its six direct current (DC) chargers, supported by a 283kWp solar farm and a 625kWh battery energy storage system. It does have a 320kVA biodiesel generator on backup but it was not required on 20 May, despite 17 EVs charging a cumulative 999kWh that day.

Another 25 EVs consumed 1,476kWh charging at the launch of the Charge Roadside station at the N3 Reitz Interchange, about 180km from Johannesburg, on 19 May, without using the generator.

๐Ÿคณ Payment and charging are handled through the Charge mobile app, which also allows users to monitor their state of charge and charging costs.

๐Ÿ’ฐ๏ธ The two charging stations installed to date received funding of R100 million from the Development Bank of Southern Africa. They form part of Chargeโ€™s broader strategy to roll out a national network of off-grid, ultra-fast solar-powered EV charging infrastructure on all major routes across the country.

๐Ÿšš The company said the stations are designed to support both passenger vehicles and future commercial freight mobility as EV adoption accelerates.

TruckScience returns as the official technical partner of Truck Test 2026.

๐Ÿ”Ž With 16 extra-heavy trucks from 10 OEMs competing this year, consistency and accuracy matter more than ever. TruckScience provides the analytical framework that keeps the playing field level and ensures the results are meaningful, repeatable and trusted.

๐Ÿšš From axle weights and dimensions to centre of gravity, payload productivity and vehicle performance analysis, TruckScience ensures every truck is measured against the same real-world criteria โ€“ giving operators and OEMs confidence in the outcome.

๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ TruckScience develops world-leading software that simplifies the process of selecting the best truck for a specific application. Its software calculates axle weights, estimates fuel consumption and predicts Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) to help customers specify safe, legal and efficient trucks.
It is also the only product in South Africa that combines weight distribution calculations, performance simulation, TCO forecasting and vehicle specification comparison in a single suite.

๐Ÿ’ก Ahead of Truck Test 2026, TruckScienceโ€™s Sales Tool software will be used to calculate fuel consumption, trip times and productivity for every participating vehicle. These theoretical projections will then be compared against the real-world test results.

At the conclusion of Truck Test 2026, TruckScience will calculate the all-important payload productivity factor โ€“ helping determine which trucks deliver the best performance for South African transport operators.

๐Ÿ’ต Because when fleet decisions are worth millions, confidence in the data is everything.

Truck Test 2026 takes place from 3-5 November. Watch this space.

ISUZU Motors South Africa used its presence at NAMPO 2026 to highlight the impact of the ongoing Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak on SAโ€™s farming community through its Farmer Solidarity Campaign.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸŒพ Running until 30 May, the campaign centres on the Farmer Stories Fund, a relief initiative that will provide R250,000 in practical support packages to selected farmers affected by the outbreak.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Farmers are invited to submit personal stories detailing how the outbreak has affected their livelihoods and operations, and how practical support could assist them during this difficult period. Entries can be submitted through a dedicated WhatsApp line or via QR codes available through the campaign platform. Selected farmer stories will be shared across ISUZUโ€™s digital platforms and agricultural media partnerships.

In addition to the three R50,000 relief awards, the campaign includes practical spot prizes aimed at easing operational pressure on farms with aftersales service relief packages.

The latest extra-heavy trucks lining up to experience Truck Testโ€™s real-world operating conditions have been entered by Sinotruk. This Chinese OEM joins a record line-up of South Africaโ€™s top commercial brands including Daewoo, DAF, FAW, MAN, Mercedes-Benz, Powerstar, Scania, Shacman and Volvo Trucks.

๐Ÿšš Participating in the 2026 event, which runs from 3 to 5 November, are two Sinotruk 480hp truck tractor models: the Sitrak G7H 6x4 and the Howo-Max 6x4. They will be assessed based on fuel consumption and speed over the 1,100km route between Johannesburg and Durban, with the results combined into a productivity index. This index answers the critical question: how much work can a truck perform per litre of fuel, and how efficiently can it complete the task?

๐Ÿ’ก How will Sinotruk fare in this exciting event? Only time will tell.

Watch this space for more updates in the run-up to SAโ€™s ultimate test of truck productivity and performance.

A truck is only as good as its components, and its components are only as good as the care they receive. It's a principle that ZF Aftermarket lives by โ€“ and it's why the company is joining Truck Test 2026 as official aftermarket partner of the largest truck comparison event in South Africa's history.

๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ From 3 to 5 November, 16 of the world's leading extra-heavy trucks will be evaluated on productivity and fuel efficiency across a demanding real-world route. The event will tell operators which trucks perform best on the day.

๐Ÿ… A truckโ€™s long-term value is shaped by the quality of its components โ€“ from transmission systems to braking solutions โ€“ and the use of genuine parts that ensure reliability, safety and efficiency throughout its lifecycle. Through its trusted aftermarket brands Lemfรถrder, SACHS, TRW and WABCO, ZF delivers high-performance solutions that support drivetrain optimisation, braking performance and overall vehicle uptime.

๐Ÿ‘ Truck Test and its entrants can only benefit from having an aftermarket partner on board that takes the total cost of ownership seriously.

Cape Townโ€™s MyCiTi is the most successful service of its kind, accounting for 42% of all passenger trips on Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) nationally. The City is increasingly concerned that national proposals to end the funding for all BRT would leave the MyCiti service stranded, with no clear future funding certainty.

๐ŸšŒ Existing MyCiTi bus services and the major new Cape Flats route expansion are set to benefit over 1,4 million residents across 30 neighbourhoods, from Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha to Wynberg and Claremont. MyCiTi ridership has grown by 68% since 2021 to 23 million passenger trips annually and is set to reach 30 million once the Cape Flats extension begins operating.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ โ€œNational funding reforms are understandable, because most BRT systems in metros and large towns have failed,โ€ said Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis in a letter to the Transport Ministry. โ€œIn some cases, billions in grant-funding has been allocated without a single scheduled service ever commencing. But some, like MyCiti, have succeeded. The state should not throw out the baby with the bathwater, by cutting funding to successful BRT services along with all the unsuccessful ones.โ€

โ€œWe donโ€™t oppose the proposed creation of a Public Transport Fund to replace the PTNG and other funding streams, but we are calling for long-term certainty and performance-based funding for MyCiTi and other successful programmes. We are also seeking the reversal of national cuts already made to PTNG funding.โ€

๐Ÿ’ก The letter did not reference any knock-on effects on suppliers to the MyCiTi network, such as bus manufacturers, although there would likely be negative impacts following a funding cut.

When FOCUS needed a trailer partner for Truck Test 2026, the brief was non-negotiable: identical units for every competing vehicle โ€“ no exceptions, no variables. Itโ€™s the only way to generate results the industry can genuinely trust.

๐ŸŽ‰ So we were thrilled when Afrit agreed to come on board again and supply precision-engineered trailers that help ensure a level playing field across all 16 competitors. Afritโ€™s longstanding reputation for innovation, reliability and excellence in trailer manufacturing makes them the perfect partner for this prestigious event.

๐Ÿ†๏ธ Taking place from 3 to 5 November this year, Truck Test remains one of the most respected and anticipated benchmarking events in the transport industry โ€“ a landmark event putting the continent's best extra-heavy trucks through their paces under real South African road conditions.

๐Ÿ‘‰ We canโ€™t wait to showcase this collaboration and bring the industry another outstanding Truck Test experience. Stay tuned for more updates in the lead-up to November!

Drivers will no doubt have noticed the gradual disappearance of Caltex petrol stations and their replacement across the country with Astron Energy forecourts.

๐ŸซŸ The rebranding programme โ€“ one of the largest in SAโ€™s fuel industry in three decades โ€“ began in 2022 and at least 700 out of 800 Astron stations now feature the signature orange and purple branding.

๐Ÿ’ก With a goal to become SAโ€™s leading fuel retailer, Astron is owned by Swiss commodities giant Glencore, which entered the local fuel market in 2017 when it purchased US-based Chevronโ€™s southern African assets for $1 billion.

Astron also operates one of the countryโ€™s largest oil refineries.

In April, the world's largest and China's first 10,000-tonne all-electric intelligent container vessel set sail from Ningbo-Zhoushan Port for the Zhapu port area of Jiaxing Port.

๐Ÿ’ก One of two such vessels produced by Ningbo Ocean Shipping Co, it represents a new phase of exploration and development for China's coastal container shipping driven by pure electric power and intelligent navigation.

โšก๏ธ With a carrying capacity of 742 standard containers, the Ningyuan Diankun is powered by ten standardised battery containers with a total storage capacity of about 20,000 kilowatt-hours, equivalent to the combined battery capacity of around 300 electric vehicles. It is expected to save 580 tonnes of fuel a year and reduce CO2 emissions by more than 1,400 tonnes after being put into operation, delivering genuinely zero-emission, zero-pollution voyages, Ningbo-Zhoushan Port said.

๐Ÿงญ The vessel is equipped with core autonomous navigation technologies for open waters and features a full suite of smart functions, including real-time panoramic vessel monitoring, all-weather visual perception, autonomous route planning, automatic collision-avoidance alerts, and seamless switching between manual and intelligent navigation modes.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Ningbo Ocean Shipping operates 32 green and energy-efficient vessels (57% of its fleet) and 19 intelligent vessels (~34%), demonstrating solid progress in its low-carbon and smart fleet upgrade.

On 10 May, the SA government officially classified the severe weather as a national disaster. Since 4 May, heavy rainfall, flooding, thunderstorms, damaging winds and snowfall have caused deaths, infrastructure damage and disruptions to essential services across the Western, Eastern and Northern Cape, and even as far as the North West, Free State and Mpumalanga provinces.

โ›ˆ๏ธ๐Ÿšš The Overberg District Disaster Management Centre reported nine instances of trucks being blown over on the N2 on Monday, and social media feeds are being flooded with video footage of trucks struggling to stay on the roads in winds gusting at over 100km per hour.

๐ŸŒŠ The Daily Maverick reports that road networks across Cape Town have been severely affected with major flooding and dangerous rockfalls creating additional hazards for motorists. The inclement weather has also disrupted Metrorail services.

โœˆ๏ธ ACSA confirms that passengers can expect flight delays, diversions or cancellations at Cape Town International and George airports, though both remain open and operational.

๐Ÿ‘‰ And as of today, it is not over: SAWS issued a Level 8 warning for the City of Cape Town, Drakenstein, Stellenbosch, Breede Valley and Witzenberg for 12 May, with mudslides, fast-flowing rivers and danger to life forecast through Tuesday.

๐Ÿšจ All drivers, pedestrians and citizens are urged to exercise extreme caution.
