SA: cheapest transport worldwide!
It would seem that everything is becoming more expensive as South Africa is experiencing increased strikes, rising inflation and slower economic growth … but don’t be deceived. GoEuro, an online platform that compares trips by train, bus and aeroplane, explains.
According to the Berlin-based travel search website, South Africa came in as the least expensive for overall transport out of 51 countries, across five continents, ranked in the Global Transportation Price Index.
Taking into account factors including distance, scheduling and taxes, GoEuro compared the cheapest bus, train and flight connections between the most populous cities in each of the countries, among other routes. Countries were then rated according to average price per 100 km for each transportation type.
“South Africa is the cheapest country for transport overall, where an average bus journey costs US$ 3,67/100 km; a train journeys costs US$ 1,88/100 km and flights cost just US$ 11,63/100 km,” says GoEuro. (That’s R39,41/100 km; R20,19/100 km and R124,9/100 km respectively.)
“The most expensive country for transport overall is Switzerland, where bus journeys cost US$ 18,67/100 km; train journeys cost US$ 38,28/100 km; and flights cost US$ 125,07/100 km.” (R200,5/100 km; R411,1/100 km and R1 343,16/100 km.)
