New buses for Bavarian transport hub

The MAN Lionโ€™s City G articulated bus can carry as many as a hundred people.

MAN Truck & Bus Deutschland and AeroGround Flughafen Mรผnchen GmbH have signed a framework agreement for the delivery of 46 regular-service buses that will be used to transport airline passengers at Munichโ€™s Franz Josef StrauรŸ Airport. The order will be delivered in three batches by 2014.

It includes 19 MAN Lionโ€™s City solo buses and 27 MAN Lionโ€™s City G articulated buses, which will all be serviced by MAN since the ground handling provider has also entered into servicing agreements with the company.

The busesโ€™ interior fittings have been changed to optimise standing room, providing ample space for four people per square metre. This increases their passenger-carrying capacity, enabling the solo buses to carry 67 passengers and the articulated buses as many as a hundred. All units have powerful air-conditioning systems and kneeling features, optimising passengersโ€™ level of comfort and simplifying the boarding and alighting process.

The buses will all be powered by MAN common-rail diesel engines, delivering 206 kW to the solo and 235 kW to the articulated buses, which is in line with the stringent requirements of the EEV (Enhanced Environmentally-friendly Vehicles) emission standard. Voith four-speed automatic transmissions will transmit this power to the driving axles.

The Franz Josef StrauรŸ Airport is the fastest growing Airport in Germany, with some 38 million passengers using the international air-transport hub every year, ensuring that MAN and AeroGround will be busy with a whole lot of rounds.
