Recycling on a roll

The Recycling and Economic Development Initiative of South Africa (Redisa) has been at it for nearly a year โ and the tonnage is looking good โฆ From December 2013, to September this year, more than 35ย 450 t of waste tyres have been collected.
The total collected includes 9ย 303 t for Gauteng, 2ย 951 t for North West and 1ย 691 t for the Free State. The Northern Cape depot gathered 2ย 045 t, the Eastern Capeโs 3ย 053 t, and the Western Capeโs 7ย 577 t. KwaZulu-Natalโs depot gathered 7ย 595 t and Mpumalangaโs depot 1ย 274 t.
A total of 23 depots are operational nationally in the following areas:
โ Gauteng: in Midrand, Mamelodi, Pretoria East, Springs, Hetherley, Onderstepoort, Soshanguve and Nelmapius;
โ Western Cape: in Vissershok and Mossel Bay;
โ KwaZulu-Natal: in Pietermaritzburg, Clairwood, Ladysmith and Jacobs;
โ Mpumalanga: in Witbank and Ferronbank;
โ Eastern Cape: in East London and Port Elizabeth;
โ Northern Cape: in Kimberley;
โ Free State: in Bloemfontein.
In addition, the recycling scheme has created 1ย 503 jobs and is currently collecting from 1ย 292 dealers. More dealers will be added as the five-year rollout continues.
