Getting into the Spirit of Africa

Getting into the Spirit of Africa

Off-road enthusiasts should be delighted to know that Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (VWCV) will, once again, be sponsoring the Spirit of Africa Trophy with the supply of 23 Amarok Double Cabs.

The annual competition was specially created for drivers who want to test their own skills against the toughest African conditions and other serious 4×4 teams.

The sponsorship also includes R100 000 prize money for the top three finishers. “Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is proud to be associated with the Spirit of Africa competition,” says Graeme Birch, manager: marketing for VWCV. “Through the competition, we have exposed our Amarok model range to thousands of people, who have since become our customers and ambassadors of the Amarok brand.”

Legendary racing driver, Sarel van der Merwe, who hosts the competition, has also joined the ambassador ranks. He gives details on this year’s event: “Apart from moving the venue from Kondowe in Limpopo, where we enjoyed two very successful years, we have made some changes to the format of the competition. The 2014 competition will be more technical and will feel like a new event to the guys who have competed in Spirit of Africa before.”

The elimination rounds of the 10th Spirit of Africa competition will run over three days. They start on April 24 and end on June 9 in Zeerust, North West.
